The Fastest Way to Ask AI About a Screenshot on Mac
Asking an AI model about something on your screen is one of the most useful things you can do with it. Explain this error. Summarize this thread. Fix the grammar in this draft. Translate this ticket. But the usual workflow is surprisingly slow.
The seven-step loop
Here is what most people do today:
- Take a screenshot.
- Open ChatGPT or Claude in a browser tab.
- Drag the image in.
- Type what you want done.
- Wait, then copy the answer.
- Switch back to the app you were working in.
- Paste it.
Each step is small, but together they take 30 seconds or more and pull you out of what you were doing. If you do it ten times a day, that adds up to real time and a lot of context switching.
The three-step loop
The steps that actually matter are: pick what to look at, say what to do, and get the result back. Everything else is plumbing.
ScreenVerb cuts the loop down to exactly that:
- Press a hotkey and select a region or window.
- Press a number key to choose an action.
- The answer is pasted back where you were typing.
There is no browser tab, no file to manage, and your clipboard is restored afterwards.
Actions worth putting on a key
The built-in actions cover the most common jobs:
- Correct Grammar for a draft in Notes before you send it in Mail.
- Translate for a support ticket written in French.
- Summarize for an incident thread in Slack you need in your standup notes.
- Explain for a Swift concurrency error in Xcode.
- Extract Text for a roadmap slide in a Zoom screen share, using on-device OCR.
You can replace any of them with your own prompt. A few ideas that work well:
- "Write a short, friendly reply to this message."
- "Turn this design into a list of UI bugs."
- "Convert this table to CSV."
- "Write a Jira ticket for this error with steps to reproduce."
When you need a conversation
Sometimes one answer is not enough. On Pro and Max, you can open an AI chat with any capture and ask follow-up questions, while the screenshot stays in context.
What about privacy?
Screenshots often contain things you would not paste into a random website. ScreenVerb gives you control over where they go:
- Bring your own key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq or OpenRouter, and captures go directly from your Mac to that provider. Your keys are stored in the macOS Keychain.
- Use Ollama to run a model locally, so nothing leaves your Mac.
- Use ScreenVerb Cloud when you do not want to manage keys. Pro includes 100 requests per month and Max includes 2,000.
Try it
ScreenVerb is free to try on Mac with up to two AI actions. Download it and set your first action on key 1.
